2013 Gewürztraminer

2013 Gewürztraminer

18.00

We sourced our 2013 gewurztraminer from Bradley Vineyard, located only one mile east of our winery.  Bradley was planted in 1983 on a west facing bench at 300’ elevation.  With Windy Gap silt loam soils this vineyard, together with our maritime climate, has proven again to be a benchmark site for gewurztraminer.  Our growing season in Elkton is long and temperate with typically little rainfall between April and October.  2013 was a warm and relatively early year.  There were some mid-season heat spikes and some early September rains.  We were able to wait until after the rains came and went, and harvested September 18.

This wine is a beautiful pale golden straw color. The fruit aromas in the nose are dominated by savory lemon curd and grapefruit with spicy cardamom and honeysuckle rising up as interesting sub plots. Characteristic lychee begins to appear with airing. The citrus fruits and spice notes dominate the taste with a pleasant touch of honeyed sweetness in the fore palate. The sweet impression fades as the wines tart acidity makes itself known. This wine then finishes rather dry, with a full and lasting mouth feel. This wine is great for sipping by itself on a summer afternoon, or anywhere you find a warm spot out of doors any season.

With the spicy character of this wine it would do great service with an Indian spiced curry dish.  If you haven’t paired gewürztraminer with blue cheese, it’s a natural delight, one of our favorites being Crater Lake Blue from Rogue  Creamery.
