Scott and Kathy West farm these grapes at their Amaranth Vineyard 8 miles east of Oakland Oregon. Their site is in the shadow of Mount Scott and gets a cooling flow of air that is ideal for this variety. Across the state the 2015 season was long, dry, warm and had higher than average heat accumulations, resulting in a bit riper style than we have seen from their site. Their shallow soils keep the vine vigor in check producing small intense clusters.
The wine is a pale straw color. The aromas highlight the herbaceous characters for which this variety is known when grown in a cool climate, with notes of fresh cut green grass, mint and grapefruit. The flavors burst in the mouth with the citrus lemon/lime and grapefruit all coming to the fore. The wine is quite tart and we find the crisp acidity very pleasing.
With the herbal flavors and citrus notes, this wine will pair well with any dishes that contain basil, mint thyme or tarragon. Sautéed white fish with a wine reduction or simple cream sauce with any of these herbs is divine.
