Our 2015 riesling comes from two vineyards in Elkton planted in 1983, adjacent to one another, Bradley and Anindor. Both had used cuttings from the original Ken Thomason Elkton planting dating to 1972. Their sites have proven to be excellent for this late ripening variety and our maritime climate here in Elkton allows for full flavors and aromatics to develop. 2015 was the third in a row warmest season on record for Oregon. We therefor harvested more on acidity and pH than sugar accumulation. Harvest for both was the earliest for us since our arrival here in Elkton in 2002, September 25.
This wine opens with stone fruits, white peach leaping from the glass, followed by floral scents of lime blossoms and jasmine, then with spice notes of cardamom and clove coming to life with airing. The entry is crisp, fresh and very lively with a fascinating interplay between the stone and citrus fruit components. The spice notes contribute to the fulfilling impression and a long satisfying finish.
This wine would be well suited to pair with fresh seafood, simple preparations featuring Asian spices, sashimi, grilled salmon or lobster, creamy cheeses or fruit plates dressed with sesame seeds or sesame oil.
